Functional Pottery and Presentation Ceramics

Jim Spector makes functional pots and presentation ceramics from stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware clays.  His designs are inspired by traditional crafts from around the world.  Over the past several years, he has become particularly interested in Japanese ceramic forms and techniques.  In 2008, he was awarded a Plank Foundation research grant that allowed him to travel to Japan to study historical Japanese ceramics, and in the summer of 2011 he participated in the internationally acclaimed ceramics residency program in Tokoname, Japan.  Jim teaches ceramics and art at the Blake School in Minneapolis.  Some examples of his work and the work of his students can be viewed on this website.
